Industry statistics

2016 was the best year in the Danish wind industry since the global financial crisis in 2008-2009 and both turnover, exports and number of full-time employees increased.

In 2016, 32,898 people were employed in the Danish wind industry and the turnover increased from 14.2 billion EUR in 2015 to 15.7 billion EUR in 2016. The wind exports increased from 6.4 billion EUR in 2015 to 7.4 billion EUR in 2016.

From 2015 to 2016 the industry's turnover saw a 10.3 per cent increase from 11.8 billion EUR to 13 billion EUR.

Turnover from energy companies with wind related activities also increased last year, and combined turnover of energy companies and the rest of the wind industry reached a total of 15.7 billion EUR.

The employment levels in 2016 followed the increase in turnover and exports.

By the end of 2016, 32,898 people were employed in the Danish wind industry including people employed in energy companies. This is an increase of 6.2 per cent from the previous year.

The wind industry's exports rose 16 per cent from 6.4 billion EUR in 2015 to 7.5 billion EUR in 2016.

Exports in 2016 were therefore on par with 2014 and approaching the level from the years around the financial crisis. The decline in exports in 2015 was due to a smaller export of offshore wind turbines.

The export share in the wind industry was 57 per cent in 2016, and since 2006 exports from the wind industry have increased by 42.2 per cent.

Exports of goods and services
In 2016, the wind industry exported more than 4 billion EUR worth of goods to EU countries and an additional 1.8 billion to third countries.

Export of goods therefore accounted for almost 80 per cent of the total exports in the industry.
The wind industry's share of total export
Just under 7 per cent of Denmark's total exports of goods are wind-related products.

That means Denmark has thee largest share of total exports coming from wind-related products in EU-15.
